Let's add some clarity to the ramble...This was the date of the fist Black Sabbath album release (in the UK, later in the US). Some say this is the start of metal, and I agree to that point. Some say it was earlier with Zeppelin, Aerosmith, etc, but at the time that was more heavy blues than having metal tendencies, Sabbath brought the very dark, the insanely heavy and the very "riffy" style to the rock genre and changed music history.

Some debate this and say it was Judas Priest that was the first metal band as they were the first to drop the blues sound, starting some with Killing Machine, but most notable with British Steel. This is a valid point too, British Steel set the mold, still used today, as how metal albums sound; catchy, riffs, dueling leads and incredible vocal range.

The debate rages on as usual, but one thing is for sure, both were very influential in shaping the music we still love today.

This conversation cannot be complete without mention of Deep Purple as one of the forefathers of the genera.
